Rainelle students remember national, local veterans

RAINELLE, W. Va (WVVA)- Students in Rainelle are back from a trip to Washington, D.C.

Teachers said the community, students, and staff raised nearly $13,000 to sent Rainelle Elementary students on a 2-day trip to the capital.

The students toured the White House and many monuments, including the WWII, Vietnam, and Korean War memorials.

Seeing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall was meaningful to the kids, especially after the Run for the Wall veteran bikers recently traveled through Rainelle.

Adam Ayers, a 4th grader who went on the trip, said, "My heart just started to feel how grateful I am that they risked our lives for us."

He added that when he approached the wall, on which more that 50,000 names of fallen soldiers in Vietnam are inscribed, he felt emotionally connected to them. "It made me feel like I'm touching their hand in the wall," he said. "It just makes me feel really sad."

For many of the students, this was their first time traveling to the nation's capital.

Several told WVVA this is a trip they will never forget.
