'You Smoke, I Smoke" campaign

MERCER COUNTY (WVVA) -- The Southern Coalfields Tobacco Prevention Network released their new anti-smoking campaign today.

'You Smoke, I Smoke" takes a look at how your pets are affected by secondhand smoke.

The campaign shows dogs and cats are very susceptible to disease caused by secondhand smoke.

Pets experience allergic reactions to secondhand smoke. Dogs that inhale secondhand smoke are three times more likely to develop lung or nasal cancer, cats in a smoking home have a higher rate of oral cancer because of the residue from secondhand smoke being on their fur when they groom themselves, and birds that sit on a smokers hand can experience contact dermatitis from the nicotine that remains on the smoker's hand.

"There's so many reasons that [people] need to stop smoking, period. Pets being something, that I think, maybe, tugs on their heart a little more than what they had thought about," said Dr. William Street, Veterinarian of All Creatures Veterinarian Clinic, at a press conference today

If you would like to stop smoking and need help, you can call the West Virginia Tobacco Quit Line at 1-800-QUIT-NOW. They will provide you with eight weeks of nicotine patches for free.

The Southern Coalfields Tobacco Prevention Network serves the counties of: Mercer, McDowell, Wyoming, Summers, Monroe, and Raleigh.
