Public hearing set for Tuesday in Oak Hill regarding Lochgelly well

OAK HILL, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection will conduct a public hearing Tuesday in Oak Hill on a re-permit application for an injection well that pumps oil and gas drilling waste underground.

Environmental organizations and some residents tell the Register-Herald of Beckley that the Lochgelly well poses a threat to health, water resources and property values. They say its history of violations warrants its closure.

The well is owned and operated by Danny Webb Construction. The well up for re-permit has absorbed more than 1.4 million barrels of waste since its creation in 2002.

Owner Danny Webb contends he has operated the well legally and plays down past violations.

The WVDEP said it will consider comments offered at the public hearing before making a decision on the re-permit.
