Town of Alderson to vote on levy

ALDERSON, W. Va (PRESS RELEASE)-- The ballot in the Town of Alderson's June 11th election includes a vote on the continuation of an excess levy—a levy which has been in place for many years.

The levy is subject to renewal from time to time and this vote is scheduled for the regular municipal election to avoid the extra cost of a separate election.

It is a continuation of an existing levy rate and it will not raise the taxes of any Alderson citizen. Alderson officials say the levy is an important element of the Town's financial structure and the financial stability of Alderson's municipal government.

They add it is essentially a "street" levy which pays for the continuation of the surfacing, resurfacing, repairs, maintenance, paving, re-paving, draining, grading, lighting, and marking. It also goes toward general operation, maintenance repair and improvement to the streets, sidewalks, pathways, public accesses, parking areas, curbs, gutters, street drains, bridges and public ways of the Town of Alderson.

Mayor Travis Copenhaver said, "I have gotten some questions about the levy and want our citizens to know that there are a lot of street needs beyond just re-paving and fixing pot holes although this levy helps with that as well.  In order to get the most benefit possible while paving, we have created a paving fund within the budget."

He added the town hopes to build up the funds for future use. "Once the fund is adequate we hope to be able to tackle significant paving in the worst areas. If this levy fails, then the substantial loss of revenue will deplete any reserve that we have built."
