Parents avoid topics of drugs and alcohol with kids

NBC News (WVVA)--Many parents aren't talking to their kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

A new report from the government's Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration finds nearly 1 in 10 parents didn't discuss smoking, drinking or drug abuse with their teenagers during the past year.  And more than 1 in 5 moms and dads don't think it would make any difference anyway.

But national surveys show teens are likely to stay away from drugs and alcohol when they're under the influence of their parents.  Especially when they know mom and dad would not approve.
