Military service dog supports local veteran

RAINELLE, W. Va (WVVA)-- When honoring veterans, one man says it's important to remember the four-legged ones, too.

Chris Campbell, an Air Force veteran, retired after injuries sustained in Iraq.

He and his family recently drove to Texas to adopt Max, a German Shepherd who also retired from injures in Iraq.

"We were injured within 8 days of each other," said Campbell as he tossed Max a ball.

The two have each earned purple hearts and other honors.

"I've got somebody who has been there now," Chris said. He added that having Max around has helped him deal with his brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder.

"It's a way to move on. It's a healing thing for me, because... he understands. The bond is there," Chris said.

The Campbells say Max has become an important part of their family, and he's a loyal guardian.
