Officials give water safety reminders this Memorial Day weekend

Posted:

HINTON (WVVA) -- Summer is right around the corner which means more and more people will be out on the water.

Park officials will be at several locations around southern West Virginia to give free Water Safety presentations to those out and about.

Officials say people should always wear a life jacket when doing any type of water activities on the lake or river. They also suggest people do not go out on the water alone and always know a little about the lake, river, or stream you're on.

Park Ranger Richard Altare says drownings do occur every year at the parks in the area. Altare says although many people think deaths occur from thrill-seeking water sports like white water rafting, they actually occur while people are wading, fishing, or swimming.
