High School students make bio-diesel

CHARMCO, W. Va (WVVA)-- You can cook with vegetable oil and clean with lye, but local students found you can also run a car with them.

Students at Greenbrier West HS have been working all year on a bio-diesel project, trying to turn household and environmentally friendly ingredients into fuel.

They finally got their old car, which was donated by a community member, to run on the bio-diesel they brewed in class.

They say it was a fun, hands-on approach to learning.

Grant Bennett said, "At the beginning of the year, I thought, 'This isn't going to work.'"

But then, as things picked up and the project moved forward, he gained faith. "I got to see it unfold and I was like, 'Hey, this is something!'"

Austin Ransom said, "It's more hands-on."

He added, "You learn while you're doing it. As you do it, I think it's easier to comprehend what you're doing."

The project taught students about chemical processes and the importance of alternative energy.
