PRINCETON (WVVA) - The Princeton Police Department has appointed a new chief as the previous chief is under investigation for "improper protocol."

Lt. J.W. Howell tells WVVA News he was appointed to acting chief on Thursday and that the previous chief, Paul Powell, is on leave as claims of "improper protocol" are investigated.

Howell could not provide further information regarding the investigation.

Powell was named police chief in January 2012, shortly after the retirement of Chief Bill Harman.

WVVA will provide further information as it becomes available.
