PRINCETON (NEWS RELEASE) - On May 22 nd and 23rd, Mercer County elementary and middle school students competed at Bluefield State College to win coveted Battle of the Books trophies for reading comprehension.

For the third consecutive year, Sun Valley readers won the top trophy in the elementary contest, outscoring second-place Bluefield Intermediate in the final round of competition on Wednesday.   PikeView Middle School bested Princeton Middle to win Thursday's event.

"Battle of the Books is a fun competition intended to encourage students to read," said Elementary Supervisor LaCosta Hodges. "This year, students and coaches at 14 elementary schools read five novels for young adults.  The questions were based on those five novels."

The Sun Valley team was comprised of Miranda Cales, Hannah Jones, Madison Bennett, Natalie Ellison, Kayli Mann, and Abigail Poling.  The students were coached by teachers Pam Skeens and Dona Scarbro.

Melinda Wyrick coached the winning middle school team.  PikeView Middle students Rachel Johnson, Bethany Mays, Kelsey Wohlford, Braxton Justice, Caleb McClung and Savannah Groom were quick on the buzzer to beat Princeton Middle in the final round.

Secondary Supervisor Dr. Judy Black praised all the participants and their coaches.  Dr. Deborah Akers, superintendent, was present both days to present the students with their awards.
