Bluefield, WV (PRESS RELEASE) -  92 year old artist has taken ‘Best Of Show' honors at the Appalachian Artist Association Spring Show, being held from now through June 27, 2013,  in the Paine Gallery, 10:00a.m.-4:00 p.m., at the Bluefield Area Arts Center.

Dart Cox's oil painting, "Monastery Garden", beat out 44 other art works at the "juried" prize show, which includes artists from the West Virginia and Virginia areas.

Cox, a Bluefield, Virginia resident, has been painting for many years. "She's fascinating! Her work is exceptional!" noted exhibit coordinator Jenifer Fox. The painter will also be having a "one woman show" in the Paine Gallery during August and September.

Other Spring Show first-place winners include Barbara Hale's "Athens House" (Watercolor), Elizabeth Hern's "Sneaky Snake In The Garden" (Mixed Media), Kevin Seabolt's "Canada Goose With Pink Reflection" (Dry Media), and Wanda Sperling's "Hollyhock and Cleome" (Acrylic). Sperling's "God Put A Rainbow In The Sky" (Oil) also claimed a top prize.

Meanwhile, the public is invited to a spring arts show reception on June 7, 5:30-7:30p.m., at the Paine Gallery. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Appalachian Artists Association was formed in 1977 to promote fine art in the Mercer, Tazewell and Bland County region, and to encourage artistic development of members. Artists are highly encouraged to consider joining,  however  membership is "juried". Member benefits include discounts on workshops, access to educational materials, shows, and community activities.

Meetings are held monthly, on the fourth Thursday, at 6:00 p.m. For more information, please contact Sarah Bowling:  appalart@gmail.com.
