Group to pay EPA $340K for Bluefield site cleanup

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says Cooper Industries LLC will pay $340,000 to reimburse the agency for cleanup costs at a Superfund site in Bluefield.

Cooper agreed to the payment as part of an agreement filed Thursday in U.S. District Court over the Lin-Electric site.

The EPA says that from 1924 to 1988, Cooper's corporate predecessors rebuilt electric motors and transformers used in coal mining.

The state Department of Environmental Protection asked EPA for help with the site in 2004.

EPA tackled high levels of elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls, of PCBs, that were polluting the Bluestone River in 2008 and 2009.

The work included the removal of 38 drums of unknown materials that had been under water.

The proposed agreement will be open for public comment for 30 days.
