Volunteers clean up run-down park in Lewisburg

LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)-- Volunteers in Lewisburg proved they aren't afraid to get messy on Wednesday as they fixed up the Andrew Lewis Park behind the circuit courthouse in town.

The Savannah Garden Club, which works on civic projects and celebrates greenery in the area, along with day workers and county leaders, picked up their rakes and hedge-trimmers to clean up the park.

They cleared away brush and revealed wildflowers and beautiful stonework around the perimeter.

Annabelle Galyean said the project was long overdue.

"Green space is important," she said. "If people feel like they're safe here, and it's welcoming, they'll use it."

Their overall goal is for the park to become a safe, fun place for families to spend time outdoors this summer, or even to use as parking as they roam the downtown.
