Community groups prepare for disaster, buy weather radios

LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)- After the tornado damages Moore, Oklahoma and rips miles of the area apart, community organizations here in West Virginia are working on disaster preparedness to be ready for the worst.

Three of those groups met Tuesday in Greenbrier County: the Greenbrier Valley Citizen Corps, the Local Emergency Planning Committee, and Medical Reserve Corps. They get together throughout the year and focus on ways to make their areas safer in the event of a disaster.

The Greenbrier Valley Citizen Corps received a state grant to purchase weather alert radios to put in several areas of the county, and emergency officials said they urge individual families to buy them too.

"If you have it in your house," said Greenbrier County Emergency Management and Homeland Security director Al Whitaker, "it sounds a very large sound that can wake you up if there's an impending storm, or whatever it is, that can threaten you and your family."

Whitaker said using these radios has the potential to save lives.
