Citizens Police Academy Graduation

BECKLEY, W.Va.- The Beckley Police Department will honor 20 citizens in a graduation ceremony from the department's Citizens Police Academy.

Mayor Emmett Pugh and Police Chief Tim Deems will be the keynote speakers at the ceremony.
Graduates will also have an opportunity to present class experiences.

For the past ten weeks, these twenty citizens from the Beckley area have spent three hours each
Thursday afternoon attending training sessions focused on educating citizens on public safety
and legal process. The citizens have learned about police related topics including Patrol ,
Investigative Services, Drug Unit, K-9 Operations, Use of Force, School Resource Officers, Law
Enforcement Technologies, Internal Investigations, Traffic Enforcement, Domestic Violence,
Beckley City Court and the Raleigh County Court system. Students also participated in a ridealong,
tour of the Southern Regional Jail and the Raleigh County Emergency Operations Center

This is the third class to graduate from Beckley's newly designed Citizens Police Academy. The
purpose of this Academy was to foster better communication between citizens and the Beckley
Police Department through education. The application for the next Citizens Police Academy will
be available January 2014.

The informal ceremony is Thursday May 23, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 the Beckley
Police Department.
