Officials remind motorists to be cautious in work zones

TAZEWELL COUNTY (WVVA) -- Road work projects are taking place across the Two Virginias and law enforcement want to remind motorists to be careful when passing through a work zone.

Officials advise drivers to pay attention to road work signs and go the speed limit. To ensure workers are safe and motorists are not speeding, the Virginia State Police have troopers patrolling work zone areas. One area is Route 460 in Tazewell County.

In West Virginia, the Division of Highways will be kicking off its Work Zone Safety Campaign at the State Capitol in Charleston Friday.

Transportation Secretary Paul Mattox will be speaking to the importance of safety in work zones.  Officials with the DOH, Governor's Highway Safety Program, West Virginia State Police, Federal Highways Administration and area contractors are expected to be on hand for the ceremony.

Discussion points will include causes of accidents, driving tips and work zone website information, among others.
