High-profile cases among latest Wyoming Co. indictments

PINEVILLE (WVVA) - Suspects in several high-profile cases in Wyoming County are among those indicted during the May sitting of the Grand Jury.

In all, 23 individuals were indicted on charges ranging from murder to drug offenses.

John Douglas New of Coal Mountain was indicted on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the slaying of county school bus driver Elaine Birchfield at her home in the Brenton area in February.

New is also charged with daytime burglary, grand larceny, and first-degree sexual assault.

Police say New killed Birchfield, then fled in her vehicle. He was arrested hours later in the Gilbert area of Mingo County.

Also indicted was Medwin Jorrell Willard of Brenton, who is charged with malicious assault, kidnapping, malicious assault of the elderly and grand larceny.

Willard allegedly attacked his grandparents inside their Baileysville home in January. A juvenile was also inside the home at the time of the incident. Willard allegedly left the scene in his grandparents' truck, and was arrested a short time later.

Joshua Dale May is indicted on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of his mother, Sandra May, last month.

Sandra was found dead outside a home in the Saulsville area. Joshua was inside the home and was taken into custody.
