Suspicious package found at W.Va. federal prison

WELCH, W.Va. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating a suspicious package discovered at a federal prison in southern West Virginia.

Federal Correctional Institution McDowell spokesman Glenn Friss says employees of the prison's mailroom flagged the package during a routine screening on Wednesday.

Friss tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that a hazardous material team determined the package contained a nonhazardous material.

Friss wouldn't identify the package's contents or say what was suspicious because the investigation is ongoing.

He says there was no danger to inmates, staff or the public.

Friss says the FBI has been contacted.

About 1,650 male inmates are housed at the medium-security prison and an adjacent minimum-security satellite prison cam
