Dissecting a Derecho: Reviewing the Storm & Preparing for the Future

Posted:

Bluefield (WVVA) - As we approach the 1 year anniversary of the June 29th derecho, the WVVA Weather Team is taking a look back. The widespread damage from this terrible wind storm was some of the worst we've ever seen here in the 2 Virginias.

Janna, Brian and Kevin spoke with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, who also spent a great deal of time forecasting the derecho. They continue to study the historic storm and are hoping to make advances in forecasting such an event.

The weather team also spoke with Appalachian Power, who's hard working crew spent weeks restoring power to nearly half a million customers.

The night the storm hit, there was a popular concert for Second Chance in Bluefield. The storm caused the concert goers to be evacuated and the organization lost a lot of money because of it.  The weather team spoke with the organizer of the event on how they dealt with the storm.

In this two part series, not only will the weather team talk about the storm itself, but also about how to prepare for severe weather season, which in the Two Virginias tends to be the warmer summer months.
