Community remembers W.Va. fallen officers

FAYETTEVILLE (WVVA) -- Law enforcement from all across West Virginia took time out of their Wednesday to remember officers who have died in the line of duty.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Department hosted the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service.

During the ceremony, they honored and listed the names of all 199 fallen officers in West Virginia since its statehood in 1863.  They paid special honor to the three officers who died in West Virginia in 2012 and Mingo County Sheriff, Eugene Crum, the sole fallen officer in West Virginia during 2013.

Also in attendance were family and friends of the late Cpl. Chuck Smith from the Beckley Police Dept.  Smith died in 2006 during an undercover drug bust.

Orators say, the ceremony was not to remember how these officers died, but instead how they lived.  Their biggest hope for next year's ceremony is that no other names will be added to the list of the fallen.
