Greenbrier Co. cupola construction beginning

LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)-- Scaffolding was going up Wednesday on the Greenbrier County courthouse.

It's the beginning of the repair process as crews work to restore the historic cupola at the top of the building.

Construction is set to begin this week.

The project costs more than 72,000 dollars, and will be funded by private donations and funding from the WV Development Office.

The Cupola will be restored to its previous condition, and officials said there is a lot of work to be done.

Kelly Banton, the Greenbrier County Commission's Administrative Assistant, said, "They will start scraping off that paint, restore any damaged wood, then they will do the repair work there, paint it back, and get it back to its original state."

Banton added construction should be finished in time for WV Day in June, where the state will celebrate West Virginia's 150th birthday.

One or two parking spaces in front of the courthouse will be available for public use until the restoration is complete.
