UPDATE: Area veterans visit nation's capital

WASHINGTON (WVVA) - A busload of area veterans are in Washington D.C. today as part of the 3rd annual 'Always Free' Honor Flight, organized by the Denver Foundation.

The program takes military veterans from southern West Virginia from as far back as World War II to the nation's capital to meet with the state's politicians and to visit several memorial sites.

The group is expected to visit the WWII Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, and possibly the city's newest monument, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, during the day-long expedition.

The bus arrived in Washington after 9 a.m. After a meeting with West Virginia's lawmakers on Capitol Hill -- including Rep. Nick Rahall, Rep. Shelly Moore-Capito and Sen. Joe Manchin -- the group visited the memorials on the National Mall.

WVVA's Josh Frketic is along for the ride and will be sending photo and video updates throughout the trip.

You can follow the veterans' journey all day here on WVVA.com and on WVVA News at Noon, 5, 6, and 11.
