Greenbrier Co. is now "Storm Ready"

LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)-- A local community gets national recognition for safety during storms.

The National Weather Service has pronounced Greenbrier County "Storm Ready". They presented emergency officials Al Whitaker and Paula Brown with the award at Tuesday's commission meeting.

The title means the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management has effective ways of getting storm warnings out to the people, and is well-prepared to deal with storms.

Meteorologists say being storm-ready is a big deal.

"If you don't know that a warning is in effect, you can't prepare," said Phil Hysell, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

"A key component to being storm ready is knowing that a warning is in effect, knowing what to do when that warning is issued, and knowing where to go. And storm-ready helps with making sure that information is received to the county and to the community at large."

Greenbrier County is the 7th county in West Virginia to be named "Storm Ready."
