W.Va. task force to examine early education prep

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin has created a task force to improve the health, development and education readiness of West Virginia children from birth to age 5.

The panel will also examine pre-natal services available to expectant mothers.

Tomblin on Monday announced the creation of the Early Childhood Planning Task Force as part of his education reform package. It is aimed at raising student achievement in West Virginia.

According to a statement released by the governor, the task force will identify services available to prepare children for school and recommend new services to achieve that goal. The task force will include a governor's designee and representatives reflecting various interests, including medicine, business and the faith-based community.

The nine members will report to the governor by the end of the year.
