Diamond ring the top item in W.Va. state auction

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The crowning jewel of an unclaimed auction scheduled by the West Virginia Treasurer's Office is just that a diamond ring appraised at $14,000.

The Charleston Gazette reports that the online auction will start Wednesday and run until May 30. It features unclaimed items left behind in safe-deposit boxes by people who died.

Treasurer John Perdue says the ring has the highest appraisal of any item offered in the past.

Anyone is eligible to bid by visiting www.wvtreasury.com and clicking the "Unclaimed Property Online Auction" icon. The site includes photographs of all items up for bid.

After safe-deposit boxes are dormant for five years, banks drill those boxes open and send their contents to the Treasurer's Office.
