THURMOND (WVVA) - Police are investigating the death of an individual in Fayette County who was apparently electrocuted while attempting to steal copper wire.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Department responded to the call in the Beury Mountain area, near Thurmond around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Upon arrival an individual was found entangled in a high-voltage transmission line. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based on their preliminary investigation, police say the deceased individual and an accomplice -- identified as 22-year-old Charles Raymond Norris -- were apparently attempting to steal copper wire by using a rifle to shoot down the power line.

Norris faces felony charges of attempting to commit a felony, conspiracy to commit a felony and disruption of a public utility.

Appalachian Power spokesperson Phil Moye told WVVA News that approximately 50 customers in the immediate area were without power for more than three hours during an outage that resulted from the attempted theft.

Service has since been restored.
