Bluefield's pit bull deadline arrives

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - The deadline has arrived for pit bull owners in the city limits of Bluefield West Virginia to register their dogs.

As of mid-afternoon on Tuesday, Bluefield City Police Chief D.M. Dillow says that more than one hundred people have registered 144 pit bulls.

The new ordinance will ban new pit bulls from the city starting Tuesday, May 8th. This means that all current pit bulls that reside in the city will be considered "new," whether or not they have lived their for years.

Chief Dillow says it was a choice left up to residents.

"After today if your dog is not registered and we get a complaint, we will issue you a citation and it will be up to the court system what to do with your dog."

Unregistered pits run the risk of being taken from their owners.
