Boards to vote on 'Reconnecting McDowell' initiatives Wednesday

WASHINGTON—The board of directors of the "Reconnecting McDowell" public-private partnership and the West Virginia Board of Education will be meeting simultaneously in McDowell County, W.Va., on Wednesday and are expected to discuss and vote on several significant initiatives intended to improve county schools and students' health and well-being.
Both boards will be meeting at River View High School in Bradshaw, W.Va., on Wednesday. The Reconnecting McDowell board will meet briefly at 11:30 a.m., then will have a joint lunch and meeting with the state board of education. Reconnecting McDowell officials will give an in-depth presentation of the partnership's work to date. Following the joint meeting, the two boards will meet separately.
The state board of education is expected to vote on a district-wide community schools plan, which was developed by the McDowell County Public Schools, the American Federation of Teachers and AFT-West Virginia. The plan, which was approved by school employees in March by an overwhelming 78 percent vote, would use public schools as hubs for community-provided programs, services and interventions.
Each school would determine its own needs, but the programs could involve remedial education; school-year and summer enrichment and learning activities; primary and mental health services; programs for truant, suspended or expelled students; job training and career counseling; nutrition services; family literacy activities; and parental education activities.
