Boy Scout Jamboree breathing new life into Mount Hope

Posted:

MOUNT HOPE, W. Va (WVVA)-- In just about 2 months, thousands of people are expected to visit the city of Mount Hope during the 2013 Boy Scouts Jamboree.

Like many Southern West Virginia towns and cities, change hasn't always been kind to Mount hope. If we could turn back the hands of time, you would see a much different city than you do today.

People tell us once upon a time, the downtown was always packed with people and business was booming.

Mayor Michael Martin can recall the different storefronts in the city of Mount Hope.

"We had clothing stores, jewelry stores. We had confectionaries, there were two doctors in Mount Hope, a dentist...We had a... full-scale working YMCA," said Mayor Michael Martin.

The town of Mount Hope has seen the transition over the years from a little coal town to almost a ghost town. But that is now seeing life again.

Amanda Walker, a Mount Hope resident, said, "I think that they just need to come down here and look around... there's still a lot of lively people in this town. There may be some more old timers than the younger generation, they just need to come and take a look around and see what they can learn about our little town."

Mount Hope has seen the changes and the upgrades that are beginning to make it vibrant all over again.
