WELCH, W.Va. (WVVA and AP) -- Funeral services will be held Thursday for a Welch police officer killed in an ATV accident.

Shaun Wellman, 32, was pronounced dead Sunday at Charleston Area Medical Center, two days after the accident while he was riding with friends on Belcher Mountain in McDowell County.

Wellman's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fanning Funeral Home in Welch.

State Police Trooper B.D. Gillespie in Welch says Wellman may have swerved to avoid hitting a dog that had run into his path.

Wellman had served several stints with the police department. He had been back for about a year after working as a coal miner.
