BECKLEY (WVVA) - A crash resulting in a tractor-trailer fire stalled traffic on I-77 near the Harper Road exit in Beckley Thursday.

Shortly after 1 p.m., a passenger vehicle headed southbound crossed the median and struck a FedEx truck. As a result the truck caught fire.

One person was airlifted from the scene. Two others were transported to a nearby hospital.

According to the West Virginia Department of Transportation, one of the trailers was carrying a hazardous material.

The West Virginia Regional Response Team, as well as FedEx's hazmat team responded to the scene. The trailer was unloaded and the hazardous material was secured around 9 p.m.

Northbound traffic was being detoured off the interstate. As of 9:30 p.m., one northbound lane had been re-opened, according to www.wv511.org

Traffic in the northbound lanes was backed up for several miles. Southbound traffic is moving.

Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes.
