Greenbrier Co. awards arts and recreation grants

LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)-- Greenbrier County is supporting arts and recreation in the area.

The County Commission, with the recommendation of the Arts and Recreation Committee, handed out $435,220 to local nonprofits and other agencies requesting funds.

35 groups received the money, including Carnegie Hall, Greenbrier Valley Theatre, the Greenbrier County Youth Camp, The Town of Rainelle, area Little Leagues, and local libraries.

Committee leaders told WVVA Tuesday the purpose of the grants is to provide arts and recreational opportunities to people in the community.

"A lot of these organizations are volunteers," said Roy Grimes, Greenbrier County's Arts and Recreation director and chairperson of the Arts and Recreation committee. Grimes suggested many of the applicants need the funds to get started on their projects and events, and often, to provide a base for fundraising.

"It goes back into the community for the community to use," Grimes said.

The money for the grants comes from Greenbrier County's bed tax.
