Local housing authority gets helpful grant

LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)--A grant helps local housing authority keep serving the community.

The Greenbrier Housing Authority has received $30,900 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to use for their family self-sufficiency program. They plan to hire someone to manage the program with the funds.

Through the program, people they serve work with professionals to make life goals. The program helps them create savings accounts, which they can access when those goals are accomplished and begin working toward a brighter future.

Leaders said Tuesday the goal is to make a more substantive change in people's lives..

"We are trying to get people to be self-sufficient," said Susan Rosshirt, the Executive Director of the Greenbrier Housing Authority. "We are trying to get people to find a way out of poverty so that they no longer need our help and our rental assistance," she said.

Rosshirt said the goal is to "get them into a home where they can be part of the middle class and paying taxes."

Because of national budget cutbacks, money has been tighter than usual at the Housing Authority. Rosshirt said this grant is helping them continue to provide services to the area.
