Local organization helps senior citizens get jobs

LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)-- Many people across the Two Virginias may be facing unemployment.

It can especially be hard on seniors... but a local organization is trying to help.

At "Experience Works," seniors learn they are not too old to go back to work.

The organization places seniors in jobs, usually at nonprofits or government agencies. It pays them and then trains them for these jobs, giving them the skills they need... including how to use computer programs they may not have ever used.

Coordinator Joan Reed said, "We find out that job description and we [see which skills you lack.] And we have up to 48 months to get you trained for that very job."

Reed said it's a win-win for all involved.

"It's a great opportunity for the host agency to test-drive a participant while the participant is making money," she said.

The end goal is getting the person hired during the time of their placement. Participants tell WVVA the new job opportunities are opening new chapters in their lives.

Experience Works is funded by private donations as well as federal grants.

If you are a senior in need of a job and would like their helping hand, call 304-253-2799.
