Greenbrier County is "Storm Ready"

LEWISBURG, W. Va (WVVA)-- A local community is recognized for its storm preparedness.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has declared Greenbrier County "Storm Ready." This means the county is proactive in reaching and serving the public during times of emergency.

Greenbrier County uses methods like mass text messaging, as well as social media to alert people about storms and hazardous events in the area. The county also has trailers stocked with disaster essentials like water and cots, that they can transport to stricken areas when needed.

But Al Whitaker, Director of Greenbrier County Homeland Security and Emergency Management, said being prepared isn't just for emergency responders.

"Getting ready is everybody's job," he said. "The way we look at it is if each individual can take care of themselves, it lessens the burden all the way across."

Whitaker said Greenbrier County HSEM is working on responding to disasters faster, and has learned a lot from recent storms like the derecho and Superstorm Sandy.

"They taught us what we need to work on," he said. "And we are seeing improvement."

Experts recommend stocking up on water bottles, non-perishable foods, and flashlights, regardless of whether a storm is approaching.
