Re-dedication of final resting place of McDowell Veteran

MCDOWELL, W.Va. (WVVA)-The final resting place of a McDowell County Veteran has finally been re-dedicated.

Saturday, April 27th members of the Sandy River VFW Post 1144 re-dedicated Earl Gene Phillips headstone. Phillips was killed in action during Vietnam while in combat on November 6, 1965 in the La Drang Valley of plekiu Province of South Vietnam. He was the first casualty of McDowell County.

Phillips headstone and grave marker had been destroyed by unknowns a few months ago. A new bronze marker was purchased by a group of Big Creek District veterans and the Veterans Administration.

Earl Crigger was the Master of Ceremonies for Saturday's re-dedication. VFW post 1144's Honor Guard presented military honors in memory of Specialist Phillips and for the sacrifice he made while serving.
