Kentucky, W. Va. miners follow Arch to Wyoming

WRIGHT, Wyo. (AP) -- Coal miners upset about possible cuts in benefits and pensions followed Arch Coal shareholders to their annual meeting in Wyoming this week.

About 30 current and retired members of the United Mine Workers of America from Kentucky and West Virginia attended Thursday's meeting in the Powder River Basin town of Wright.

The Gillette News Record reports they're worried about benefits at mines once owned by Arch but sold in 2005. The current owner, Patriot Coal Corp. filed a motion in Bankruptcy Court in St. Louis asking to change health-care payments to retirees it says are unsustainable.

St. Louis-based Arch Coal says it didn't sign a contract with the union and isn't involved.

Union deputy director Robert Gaydos said Arch CEO John Eaves listened to the miners but didn't answer their questions.
