Designers share new plans for Coal Heritage Park

WHITESVILLE (WVVA) -- The founders of the Upper Big Branch Mining Memorial are breathing more coal history into the town of Whitesville.

Thursday, they displayed and spoke with the public for the first time about their new design for the Coal Heritage Park.

Right now the plans include two picnic pavilions, stage, and a riverfront walking trail.  In the future the organizers want to add a coal museum and access to Coal River.

"Most of us come from coal families.  If coal does not support us now, our parents did, our grandparents did, and that's who we are, so we wrap our arms around that and embrace that.  And we want people to know that we're proud of that heritage," says Sheila Combs, president of the UBB Mining Memorial Group, on the new project.

Organizers hope to finish the first phase of the park by next summer.
