Electronic voter registration coming to WV

RAINELLE, W. Va (WVVA)-- Leaders said Thursday that this year's West Virginia state Legislative session has been successful.

WVVA caught up with West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant at the Rainelle Centennial Celebration.

She said legislators passed a bill that allows electronic voter registration applications.

State agencies like the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will be able to send applicants' information to their county clerks electronically, as well as provide for online registration.

The clerks would still need to approve the applications, but Tennant said the process will be faster.

"It is more efficient, it saves money," Tennant said. "It helps for our voter rolls to be more accurate too. Instead of handwritten numbers, you're going to have electronic numbers that you can read so much easier."

Tennant said voters as well as those handling the voter registration applications will benefit.

"This is a benefit to the Secretary of State's office, the DMV, and especially to the county clerks," she said.

She added the electronic registration would make the process easier for West Virginians.

The bill becomes effective in 90 days.
