Rainelle celebrates its 100th birthday

RAINELLE, W. Va (WVVA)-- The Town of Rainelle is celebrating 100 years of existence.

It's 100th birthday weekend kicked off Thursday with the Centennial Celebration Opening Ceremony.

The Raine brothers founded Rainelle after moving there from Pennsylvania in 1906.

Students as well as Senators, and even West Virginia's Secretary of State, came together to honor Rainelle's rich history of coal and lumber.

Debra Davidson, part of the Rainelle Centennial Celebration Committee, said the celebration is all about heritage. But in the next 100 years, she hopes Rainelle will continue to grow.

"We just hope this town just flourishes," she said. "That it expounds... on its business-mindedness. I think this town has a lot to give."

The celebration continues through Sunday with live music, The Mayor's Walk on Saturday, and sporting events including a muzzle-loader competition.
