APCo IDs sites for data centers in western Va

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- Appalachian Power is identifying potential sites in western Virginia for data centers.

The company said Thursday that the effort's goal is to help lure high-tech jobs and large capital investment to the region. It's part of a program by parent American Electric Power to identify sites for data centers in its 11-state service area.

The Center for Research and Technology in Roanoke County and Progress Park in Wythe County are the first two sites in western Virginia to be designated as meeting the program's criteria.

Criteria for supporting a data center include electric and fiber optic telecommunications infrastructure, risk of natural disasters and other hazards, tax policy and incentives, and a suitable climate.

Consultants Biggins Lacey Shaprio & Company and energy advisory group Sugarloaf Associates conducted the evaluations.
