Historic Greenbrier Co. courthouse's cupola to be restored

LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVVA) -- The historic Greenbrier County Courthouse's wooden cupola is getting a facelift.

The Greenbrier County Commission has awarded a contract to restore the cupola above the courthouse in Lewisburg.

The winning bid was placed by Allegheny Restoration and Builders, Inc. out of Morgantown, Kelly Banton with the Greenbrier County Commission told WVVA Thursday.

Their bid was for $72,400. The project will be funded with private donations and funding from the West Virginia Development Office.

Commissioners said the work can be done in time for West Virginia's 150th birthday on June 20th. The contractor has not set a start date for the construction just yet.

The courthouse opened in 1837. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
