Home security in spotlight as summer nears

RONCEVERTE, W. Va (WVVA)-- In light of recent national tragedies, as well as vacation season fast approaching, home security is on the minds of many homeowners.

Protecting the home from intruders, especially during trips and family vacations, can cause some worry while you're trying to relax this season. At Hersman's Safety Products in Ronceverte, they say they've been selling a lot of video surveillance equipment as people feel moved to protect their homes professionally.

The cameras can even be viewed from anywhere using a smart phone app, which may come in handy to ease many minds.

But there are also simple things you can do while away to better protect your property.

Ben Hersman, who works at the shop said, "It's a good idea to look like you're home when you're not. One way you can do that is having lights on a timer just like Christmas lights. Plug some lights on a timer and let those come on and go off while you're away."

Some people told us they leave a car in the driveway when they're gone, or keep the TV on.

Hersman said it's also important not to post how long you'll be away from home on social media.
