Ronceverte plans to go green

RONCEVERTE, W. Va (WVVA)-- The city of Ronceverte is hoping to go green.

At a Sustainability and Energy Fair scheduled for Saturday from 10-4, leaders will unveil potential plans for the city including solar panels, an electric car charging station, and a community garden.

These will be funded by grants.

Organizers hope going green will boost business... And save the city money on its energy bills. They say it's all about revitalizing Ronceverte.

Tomorrow's Sustainability Fair will focus on how residents and businesses can be more environmentally friendly.

It will be at the Clifford Community Center in Ronceverte.

The following press release is from the Ronceverte Development Corporation:

The Main Street Ronceverte Program of the Ronceverte Development Corporation (RDC) is pleased to announce the 2013 Ronceverte Sustainability Fair on Saturday, April 20th, 2013. This event will be held from 10 am to 4 pm at the Ronceverte Community and Recreation Center, 301 East Edgar Avenue in Ronceverte.

The fair is designed to provide the local and regional community with information on economic, environmental and social sustainability concepts that can be utilized in our homes and our community. This fair will have something for everyone! Ronceverte's own Eco-Community Plan by Down Stream Strategies will be on display along with the Ronceverte Bendix design concept by the WVU Landscape Architecture Program.

Bring the family to experience food, fun interactive exhibits, vendors and live entertainment. Yes, live entertainment will be provided by the Greenbrier Academy for Girls Performance Group. The group will be playing their favorite hand drum rhythms for our enjoyment. In addition, the popular acoustic trio Sassafrazz will entertain with music from the Celtic and Appalachian traditions with fiddle, mandolin, guitar, dulcimer and cittern. Rain barrels and composters will be raffled off every hour throughout this exciting day.

The Fair is sponsored by Main Street Ronceverte.

The Main Street Ronceverte Program of the Ronceverte Development Corporation strives to meet the economic redevelopment challenges of downtown Ronceverte by maintaining historical and cultural landmarks while improving the well-being of all residents with an emphasis on environmental revitalization and community resilience.

To accomplish these goals, the Main Street's Economic Restructuring Committee was granted a West Virginia Main Street Innovation Award in 2012 to develop a plan for an Eco-District in Ronceverte, WV. The Economic Restructuring Committee chose the Downstream Strategies group of Alderson, WV, known for their skills in environmental economics, survey design and execution, to provide the planning services. This effort resulted in an innovative Eco-Community plan for the friendly river city. This plan boasts a multi-phased approach to creating a business district that emphasizes green infrastructure practices, energy efficient concepts, and promotes renewable energy programs to provide sustainable green development opportunities for the town.

The Ronceverte Green Team has been working for more environmentally friendly practices in the city. Their future plans include:

  • conducting energy audits and building surveys, comparing good and best practices building by building, then working with the owners to make improvements;

  • creating a website as a resource, providing reference information and advice; and

  • working with the City of Ronceverte to implement curbside recycling.
