BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Tom Dunn Energy Leadership Academy is currently accepting applications from high school students across the state.

If a high school student is interested in learning more about natural gas, regional career opportunities and leadership skills, they can apply to participate in the 2013 class. There is no cost to participate. All students who attend and fully participate in the 3-day event, July 9-11, 2013 at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W. Va., will receive certificates of completion for their efforts.

The Academy was founded by the Independent Oil and Gas Association of West Virginia in August 2012 to honor the memory of one of its pioneer members and industry leaders, Tom Dunn. Dunn served as President of the Independent Oil & Gas Association of West Virginia (IOGAWV) in 1974. Under his leadership, IOGAWV won a major regulatory victory, which precipitated major growth in the association.

His work in the industry earned him a slew of awards and accolades. He was honored with the West Virginia Oil & Gas Man of the Year Award; the West Virginia Wesleyan College Alumni Award in 1982; the Buckhannon Business & Professional Women's Club Outstanding Employer of the Year in 1985; and was one of the two initial recipients of the IOGAWV Distinguished Service "Gunslinger" Award in 1992.

In April 2012, Dunn unexpectedly died of cancer. His devotion to the industry, education and the state of West Virginia inspired all those around him. To honor his legacy, the Tom Dunn Energy Leadership Academy was formed, and will have its seminal class this summer.

"We believe that there is no better way to honor the memory of our dear friend," said Dennis Xander, president of IOGAWV. "Tom Dunn understood the energy business in West Virginia, and the importance of training interested and skilled students in our region for the wonderful careers the industry offers - many of which are right here in the Mountain State."

"There is no cost to selected participants for tuition, lodging or meals. Space is limited and we will be selecting students who show leadership potential, strong academic background and a desire to learn more about the industry and career opportunities," said Xander.

The application deadline is Wed., May 1, 2013.
