LEXINGTON (WVVA) - A transit officer shot during Friday morning's gunfight between police and the Boston Marathon bombing suspect is a VMI grad -- NBC affiliate WSLS reports.

Richard Donohue, 33, graduated from the Virginia school in 2002. He was injured overnight as police chased the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings.

Authorities said Friday morning that Donohue was in surgery at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge.

Virginia leaders expressed their support for Donohue via social media.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with VMI grad MBTA officer Richard Donohue, injured this morning in Watertown" tweeted Va. Gov. Bob McDonnell.

"Rooting for recovery of injured Boston transit officer Richard Donohue" tweeted Senator Mark Warner.
