King Coal Highway Supports Seek Millions in Funds

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP)- Supporters of the King Coal Highway are seeking millions in additional federal dollars to help create a useable segment of the highway in southern West Virginia.

Members of the King Coal Highway Authority were in Washington on Thursday and asked West Virginia's congressional delegation for federal funding for various segments of the highway.

The project would extend some 95 miles through Mingo, Wayne, Wyoming, McDowell and Mercer counties. Another segment from Williamson to Huntington would extend an additional 55 miles.

According to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, the delegation also plans to request a high-priority funding status for the King Coal Highway on the state level.

King Coal Highway Authority Executive Director Mike Mitchem says the highway would lead to new home and business construction.
