W. Va. law enforcement heightens security at big events

FAYETTEVILLE (WVVA) --

In light of the Boston Marathon, law enforcement and planners are taking extra steps to ensure safety at a large event in the two Virginias -- Bridge Day.

Bridge Day is held every year in October. Dare devils jump off the New River Gorge Bridge.

The event has been going on for more than 30 years and has grown so large that organizers expect about 100,000 people each year now.

Fayette County Sheriffs, State Police, Homeland Security, the National Park Service, even the FBI patrol the event in more ways than the average spectator is aware.

Security will be amped up in 2013, but the terror in Boston won't be stopping the event.

"This is a new world, and we just have to try to make each event safe as you can, as safe as possible.  And you can't limit what you do because of something like this.  You have to have your life and experience it," says Sharon Cruikshank, director of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce.

Law enforcement encourages cooperation and patience with safety measures taken this October.
