Fire training at local airport prepares first responders

MAXWELTON, W. Va (WVVA)-- A controlled blaze was ignited at the Greenbrier Valley Airport runway.

The 8-hour burn was part of Federal safety training required fore firefighters and the airport, to help them prepare for an emergency.

Greenbrier Valley Airport crews and local firefighters teamed up to battle the blazes as if they were real fires, and trainers said this isn't just for show.

Timothy Imperio, an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) said, "Everybody is trained, everybody knows they have a job to do and they know how to do it... They know they have to come in, put the fire out, rescue people, save the environment, protect the property, but number one is to protect the people on the aircraft."

Crews practiced putting out wheel, engine, cabin, and fuel spill fires.

The training is done every year.
