Obama budget includes $30M for Bluestone Dam upgrade

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- President Barack Obama's budget proposal includes $30 million for an ongoing project to stabilize the Bluestone Dam on the New River.

U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller says the dam has serious structural problems. The West Virginia Democrat says in a news release that it's important for Congress to prioritize public safety projects as it works to reduce the federal deficit.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced the 20-year project in 1999. It's expected to cost a total $300 million.

The project will bring the dam in Hinton up to modern safety standards.

Rockefeller says Obama's proposed funding would be used to install anchors throughout the dam. It also would pay for the next phase of the project's engineering and design work.
